Why does Sunil Gavaskar think that Rohit Sharma’s batting strategy in the IND vs. SA Test series has to change?

Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami were crucial to India’s ICC World Cup 2023 campaign, but Rohit Sharma—the captain of the Men in Blue—was the unsung hero of the match for his superb batting. During the ODI World Cup, the seasoned opener led the way and produced powerful starts, showcasing “Playstation batting.” After India lost the World Cup final, Rohit was rested for the South Africa white-ball leg of the team’s trip, with Suryakumar Yadav captaining the T20Is and KL Rahul the ODIs.

In the next first Test match at SuperSport Park in Centurion against South Africa, Rohit Sharma is expected to take the leadership for the first time. But according to the great Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit would have a difficult time changing his batting strategy for the Test series against the Proteas. Gavaskar emphasized that Rohit has to change his ODI mentality to one that is more patient and calculated, as is necessary for Test cricket.

Before the Boxing Day Test, Gavaskar stressed to Star Sports the mental adjustment that Rohit must make in order to adjust to the pressures of a Test match environment. “He will have to change the approach completely for Test cricket because he will have to think in terms of batting the whole day,” Gavaskar said. Taking note of Rohit’s explosive stroke range, Gavaskar said that if he can lead the innings, Rohit can score a lot and make a big contribution to India’s total.

India, led by Rohit, is hoping to win a Test series in South Africa for the first time ever. This remarkable achievement has escaped them in seven of their eight trips there since 1992. Gavaskar thinks that for Rohit to lead India to victory in the difficult Test series against South Africa, a change in strategy—concentrating on occupying the crease and batting all day—will be essential.
